Vast Extension

Alexander Magno’s power reached countries and countries… 

Last night the sky was covered with stars. 

We lift our arm, with the palm of our hand down, as if we were trying to reach for something. Then, we move our hand, in the air to represent the vast extension of something. If the space is near the floor, the arm will move horizontally; if it is higher, we lift our arm and rise it as if it were an arch. 

We can also use both arms and cross them.

We bring all our fingers together, from either one hand or both. We open and close our hand rhythmically to describe how busy a place is. This gesture goes with phrases such as: it is like this…; her classes are always like this…; the gesture takes place when saying the adverb

Spaniards refer to quantity by shaking one hand; this is the same action you would do after hitting your hand with a hammer. This gesture usually goes with a sight, transcribed as ¡buf! It can be used in different situations, when saying: She bought heaps of books; There was lots and lots; His temperature went up…! It was hard to get the result…! I really had to queue…!

There is another gesture that only refers to size, and it consists of making an arch with your index finger and thumb. The arch can open more or less, at the time one says phrases such as: She was wearing high heels this big; He has written as many books as this.
